We’re talking about “smart” as in technologically advanced.

What is a smart city?

Seattle is the 5th smartest city in the entire United States, according to a new study from Top10.com. This particular study defines a “smart city” as one that uses technology like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to further improve the city’s infrastructure and public services while simultaneously providing even better opportunities for economic and social growth.

These are America’s smartest cities in 2024 according to Top 10:

  1. New York City
  2. Washington D.C.
  3. Boston
  4. San Francisco
  5. Seattle
  6. Denver
  7. Los Angeles
  8. Columbus, Ohio
  9. Austin
  10. Pittsburg

Coming in at Number 5

Seattle ranks right in the middle on the list of top 10 smart cities in America. This is partly because it is home to so many tech companies, like Amazon, Microsoft, and so many others. The study listed the fact that technologically advanced employment-finding services and the ability to easily chime in on ideas for local government projects are among the other technological benefits that Seattelites enjoy. Additionally, the city received a BBB rating from the Global Smart City Index 2020.

Seattle’s Smart Project

One of the best smart initiatives coming out of Seattle is The Food Rescue Innovation Labs. This project is an initiative from Seattle Pacific University and the City of Seattle’s Innovation Advisory Council to develop software for food rescue efforts by providing open-access and real-time information about excess food, transportation options, and other important logistics needed in order to rescue surplus food. The potential app could be used by many food-oriented businesses, potential food donors, local meal programs, and food banks. This smart project has the potential to seriously impact food security and food waste prevention efforts in Seattle and around the world.

SmartAmerica Challenge

Seattle is ahead in the race to be a technologically advanced city. However, across the country, local city governments are beginning to upgrade their infrastructure in order to benefit from the Internet of Things (IoT). This is due in part to the White House Presidential Innovation Fellow initiative called the SmartAmerica Challenge. It aims to combine projects from many different sectors like smart manufacturing, healthcare, smart energy, intelligent transportation, and disaster response in order to greatly improve every American’s daily life and of course, to benefit the U.S. economy.
